Second to last painting from this year, ....

Heezenstraat Doetinchem, The Netherlands.

No it didn't snow today, ... pitty btw. But I painted a couple more last Saturday. This is one of them. It wasn't that easy though cause the snow and wind made it quite hard to keep my palette snow free, still havn't found a good sollution for that. Maybe an so called objective heater as they use in astronomy would do the trick, .... if only there was more snow to make this effort more logical.

Heezenstraat Doetinchem. The Netherlands
Oil on panel. 24 x 30 cm.

My setup during this day, it didn't work that well with the umbrella, the wind was a bit too strong and on one point it became to heavy with the snow on top as well. (I don't like umbrella's that much for painting outdoors anway you sometime's ending up being more busy with the umbrella then with painting.) Will post the painting I made here tommorow.

Between the showers, Doetinchem, The Netherlands

Although it gives dramatic light it's a crime to paint in, ... showery weather. Bright sunlight against heavy clouds and raincover. And each time you trying to hold yourself not to chase after that particular light, ...but in the end I couldn't resist the bright light smashing against that wall and I'll guess I pulled it off quite well.

Caterpillar track Arnhem The Netherlands

Again a awesome day with the Pictura Gelria paint out group, we went to the open air, or better!!
The PleinAir museum in Arnhem, a museum with all kinds of historic buildings which stood all over the country and had to move through the years, a lovely museum cause you can walk from the north of our country to the south in just a few minutes, ... can you imagine how many lovely subjects there are to paint?! During the winter season there is a little Marketplace in the centre of this museum, with a carousel ans little stands with all kinds of early 1900 stuff, like wooden shoes and willowbaskets and of course deep fried dougnuts, ... mjammie!! So you see it's not all happening in the so called "Holland" this side of the Netherlands is just as beautiful to say the least!!

Getting COLD!

Today something else, while its getting colder I've got the question how to keep painting?

There are several thing you could do to stay warm and keep your paint working. First of all, clothing use wool / Marino wool this holds te warmth better when wet then cotton up to 80% of the isolation is kept by wool as for cotton this is only 30% . wear good boots, most of the cold is coming from the ground. you can wear fishing boots, but I like to wear huntingboots (Muckboots©) cause they are more suitable for strolling around and are more protected against thorns or heather ect. On the other side, wear a hat, cap or what ever, ... most heat is getting lost through your head, inmagine your neck and head like a chimney sucking the warmth right out of your body. As for the hands wear fingergloves where you cut of the three fingers you need to hold your brushes, ... some use mitten and stick the brushes through them, I'll reckond both could work together as well.

Cold Willow. Doetinchem The Netherlands.
Oil on panel. 24 x 30 cm.

There are lots of aids to keep your hands warm, such as Hand-Warmers there are several models, Chemical ones, fuel burners and coalburners. I used the Charcoal one for some times but I didn't like the fact that they stop burning when you don't move so while you paint they getting less and less usefull, ... the fuel burner one I used last winter and almost torched a caffee with it! You can't see if the're burning and when they do you can't stop them!! which was quite dangerous when it burns more then you want, .... The chemical ones are the simpelest once you flick the metal coin inside and voíla heath!! They tend to go lazy after a while tho, but then again now fire needed and now danger of self-combustion.

More info on the Handwarmers:

For the pochade I use a so called Thermobag,

This because the paint tend to go a little crumble with low temperatures especially the white can't go much deeper then -10 dgr. C I warm up the pochade befor I leave on the heating and keep it as much as possible in the thermo bag. The same I do with my turp which tend to get less resolving power when getting cold. Sigg© has some nice Neopreen pouches for their waterbotles nowadays which suites the fuelbottles for MSR© nicely as well, this way I try to keep my stuff as warm as possible.

Last but surely not least, DON'T paint a 1000 miles from the nearest choco!! In the end you will get cold, believe me standing still (more or less) for serveral hours will cool you down what ever you do, so a nice cup of hot chocomilk after a painting session is well worth it !!

For the rest I think it's al innovation, so if you have some nice ideas please share them!!

Midnight train Doetinchem, The Netherlands.

Dreadful weather yesterday, even I found it too grey, no Sunshine and the whole day you have the idea that's the day wouldn't want to take off, ... luckily I had to prepare some panels, yes with that painting group Pictura Gelria you really notice that your panels are going a lot faster, anyway when the day wouldn't start I thought that I better could go with it then against, so I decided to go for a nocturnal.

This is a little railroad bridge, where my girl is going over  twice a day for her work, ... a very old one (the bridge, I mean) with lots of interresting details.

Staying on the radar

Guess something went wrong the last time I posted something,
I didn't see any thumbnails of my painting nor from others.
But this seems to be solved now.

To stay on the radar I post a painting from last year,
It's quiet simular weather at the moment but mainly
caused by the rain which went on the whole day today.

This was done for some sort of fun site on FB, painting
just outside you door, ...

It's going to be change soon there will be a little road comming
between these two houses probably next year.

much that I couldn't get any paint on the panel anymore, so I wiped that

different, strange in a way.
